  Christopher Turner

teaching

Vocal and Piano Studio

Having performed at the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Cadogan Hall and St Martin in the Fields, Chris has a wide field of knowledge of repertoire. Be it Oratorio, Opera, French Melodie, German Lied or English Song, Chris has spent many years exploring the repertoire in his own performance as well as student-teacher dynamic. It is imperative to Chris that his lessons are informative and rewarding - but equally, hard work.

Being a singer pulls on most of your concentration. It requires all aspects of coordination, vocally and physically, on stage (particularly in Opera). Together in lessons both the student and I will discuss the different muscles masses which enable the voice to function at optimum. We will also work at relocating tension away from the voice to enable freedom of vocalisation.

Chris dedicates much of the little time he has between performances to teaching, and after many years of coaching has learned that no two singers are alike. No two voices are a-like. For this reason, it is imperative that student and teacher spend time getting to know a students capabilitie's and pitfalls. It is only then that we can start to build a safely produced, supported sound.

His skill for teaching and pedagogical knowledge has been recognised by The Birmingham Conservatoire and The Royal Northern College of Music, where he has recently been appointed as a member of the Vocal and Opera Faculty.

What to Expect in Lessons

In lessons we will explore all aspects of your voice. This includes: Support Mechanisms, Vocal Production, Vocal Anatomy, Tonal Quality, Linguistics, Breath Control, Performance Anxiety, Memorisation Techniques. Last but not least, to have fun!

What Should I Bring for my First Lesson

In your first lesson we will undoubtedly explore your voice, knowledge and ability in all aspects of singing. Its important to bring music which you have already worked on along with any references from previous teachers and/or examination report sheets.

What I Expect of a Student

It is imperative that both student and teacher put an equal amount of work into your lessons. I expect most students to turn up on time, know their music, researched the repertoire and to have translated their repertoire prior to their lesson.

Block Booking and Regularity of Lessons

Most students require a minimum of one lesson per week. Students over the age of 18 years usually require an hour, and those younger than 18 years usually require 60 minutes. Block Booking and Lesson Prices available on request.
